I love the black cherry and blue colors on the 2017 website. I'd totally own a manual Corolla, if only my wife would agree to drive it too. Too bad she has no desire to learn, and even if she did learn, she wouldn't drive it daily.

Somebody remind sylists that bumpers aren’t bad.

Since hoods no longer extend to the front of the vehicle (this way you no longer need to replace the hood AND front end in fender-benders), there isn’t so much necessity for exposed front bumpers since the front end is a crumple zone and will be trashed at just about anything higher than acceptable parking lot speeds.

Kinja'd!!!

Pretty much, hood is fine now (cheaper insurance claims) and front end is replaced in most claims regardless of exposed bumpers so might as well make the cars look better.

I’m talking styling. That BMW still has a bumper styled into it. Looks better than hiding it behind a huge grille that overwhelms the whole front of the vehicle.

Of course in those toyotas, the bumper is hidden, and the hood does extend to the front of the body, so...

Wow. They actually made the Corolla uglier. Also looks like they ditched the four-speed automatic from the L trim level. Nice to see there’s still a manual-transmission option.

The Corolla is a good car. It’s not bad looking either. I like it in the dark green. Buuuuutttt.....

It's been basically the same car going on 15 years. 1.8L engine pushing out around 120-130 hp, near same size (just grows a little each model), same suspension set up (torsion beam out back, standard struts up front), and I could probably go on. It'll run forever with normal maintenance, though. Don't know about the newer ones but my 04 was super easy to work on.

Here’s a better picture, those bumper sections protrude ahead of the hoodline more than they appear to.

All the more reason to save 15k and just get a corolla with the 2zz/6spd.

It’s still ugly from that angle.

Also, I’d think such large grilles would be bad for aerodynamics.

Ugly keeps you out of traffic accidents because it gets people to stay away from your car. It’s a safety feature! Worked for Ferrari anyways.

No offense to Toyota here, but now I REALLY love my ‘03 Corolla S. It’s got 38 more horsepower then the ‘17 and has good fuel economy still, and looks much better then those (especially the red one)

Good luck finding one. I’ve seen one. That’s all. I think that Matt Farrah video said there was something around 20k ever made.

RIP, Scion. Interesting that they’ve mashed up Toyota’s and Scion’s names on the iM and iA, too.

Thanks to your encouragement to check Toyota’s website, today I learned that the Scion iM is now the Corolla iM. It’s obviously very premium because of all this stitching in the interior. Even the airbag cover has stitching on it.

Your 03 has 130 hp. The S had the 1.8L that was the same as all of the others.

The 1.8L had a mild refresh in the next generation that got variable exhaust timing as well as variable intake timing that was already present in the earlier 1.8L. That’s what gave it better efficiency so despite the vehicle going up in weight it has marginally improved for MPG.

Keep in mind the SAE revamp for HP ratings did drop the 130 and the MPG numbers in comparison to what was on the window sticker originally.

In the mixed cycle, the new Corolla does 31 mpg versus 28 for the 4-speed automatic that the 03 Corolla had.

Just for funsies back in like 2012, I did a stop light drag race between my 1995 corolla and my friend’s 2010 corolla. We were neck and neck all the way to around 60 where my car ran out of juice but his kept accelerating at the same speed. I thought it was kind of interesting that the zero to 60 was basically the same, but his car kept going after that where-as mine did not.

My original engine started knocking almost one year ago. I got a lightly used one from a 2005 XRS model, which I believe made 170ish horsepower according to R&D. I could be wrong on this, and I bet it doesn’t make 170 horsepower now, but oh well. But thanks for the info, I’ve always wondered how much MPG I’m actually getting.
